History of the Home
Built in 1886 by John Milton Armstrong, the home was located on Cleveland Circle near busy downtown St. Paul. For nearly 60-years the house was home to various tenants. In 1943, the home was sold by the Armstrong family to John and Dorothy Bloomquist Gordon. In 1948, the home was sold to Helen Larson and became home to the Key Hospital for Recovering Alcoholics. By 1949, Bertha Quinlan had purchased the home and turned it into a nursing home which she ran until she retired in 1964 after which time the home became a board and care facility.

In 1983, local historic preservationists succeeded in having the home placed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was not long thereafter before the house was designated a Saint Paul Heritage Preservation Site.

Between 1987 and 2000, the State of Minnesota owned the home and considered it a potential site for the Minnesota Center for the Arts Education. However, in 2000 with a different site located for the Center for the Arts Education, the City of St. Paul purchased the property with the intent of preserving the home and relocating it to its current location.

In November of 2001 the 900-ton home was moved from Cleveland Circle to its current location near Historic Irvine Park, across from the Science Museum and near the banks of the Mississippi River. This short but dramatic move involved moving power lines, mailboxes, traffic lights, road signs and even parking meters to provide enough room for the 900-ton home to make the move.
