The New York Times has an interesting calculator on their website that compares the annual costs and savings of renting versus buying.  The calculator entitled Is It Better to Buy or Rent? allows you to enter many variables into the equation including inflation, rent increases, value of home, taxes, down payments, and much much more!  While the calculator factors many things into the equation, it shouldn’t be the definitive answer to whether you should purchase a home or rent – it is merely one tool of many in the toolbox to be used when making your decision.  The financial impact of purchasing a property is just one of the many factors to consider when thinking of purchasing.
